ARIC研究の参加者から4419名の高齢者（平均75歳）について心エコーを行い、血糖レベルとの関係を調べた。正常に比べると前糖尿病、糖尿病では心筋肥大と拡張障害があり、わずかに収縮障害を伴った。HbA1cが1％上がると左室massは3g増加した。拡張障害の指標となるE/E'は0.5増加した。
