二重構造の鱗

Marc Meyers, a mechanical engineer at the University of California, San Diego, caught an arapaima (Arapaima gigas) while sport-fishing in Brazil and took some of its 10-centimeter scales back to his lab for testing.　ピラニアの攻撃をはねつける肺魚（アラパイマ）の鱗は表面がカルシウム化した固いコラーゲン、裏面が弾力を持つコラーゲンでできていてピラニアにかまれてもひびが広がるのを防ぐ構造になっている。古生代の鎧を被った魚は成功しなかったがアラパイマは新素材で生き延びているようだ。
