RIKEN, TRI develop next-generation robot, with remote care in mind
Researchers at Japan's RIKEN and Tokai Rubber Industries (TRI; Komaki, Aichi) have developed RIBA-II, the second version of a robot that uses high-precision tactile sensors and flexible motor control technology to provide remote care for senior citizens. According to RIKEN, RIBA-II can lift a patient up to 80kg (176 lbs.) in weight off of floor-level bedding and into a wheelchair, freeing nursing care professionals of the task. RIBA-II offers added power and functionality compared with the original robot - for example, it can crouch down and lift a patient off a futon at floor level due to new joints in the base and lower back that were not present in the original RIBA, short for Robot for Interactive Body Assistance. RIBA was unveiled in 2009 by RIKEN-TRI Collaboration Center for Human-Interactive Robot Research.
